Scottish Parliament introduces Gaelic-English bilingual logo

25.04.2008

The words ‘Pàrlamaid na h-Alba’ are to be introduced into the Scottish Parliament’s official logo it was announced today. (Details in Gaelic below.)

The Gaelic for ‘Scottish Parliament’ will begin appearing from today on new parliamentary publications, transforming the Crown and Saltire device into a bilingual English – Gaelic logo.

The move comes as part of the Parliament’s Gaelic Language Plan, required under The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005, which seeks to give effect to the principle that the Gaelic and English languages should be accorded equal respect.

Presiding Officer Alex Fergusson said:

“One of the core commitments of our Gaelic Language Plan is to introduce Gaelic into our corporate identity. Incorporating the words Pàrlamaid na h-Alba’ into the existing Crown and Saltire logo underlines our continued commitment to the Gaelic language and to the spirit of the Gaelic Language Act.”

New parliamentary publications and reports will begin carrying the bilingual device as it becomes the new official version of the parliamentary logo.

To eliminate waste and minimise cost, the Parliament will continue to use existing resources such as headed stationery and shop stock until they require to be replaced.

The cost of creating and introducing the new logo is approximately £3,500. Funding was provided by Bòrd na Gàidhlig to cover these costs.

The design work was carried out by the Parliament’s existing publications contractor.

Background

Under The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the body charged with implementing the Act, may give notice to public bodies requiring it to prepare a Gaelic language plan, seeking to give effect to the principle that the Gaelic and English languages should be accorded equal respect.

The plan should set out the measures to be taken by the body in relation to the use of the Gaelic language in its work and specify the date by which the measures are to be taken.

The Parliament’s aim is for a phased introduction of the new version of the logo over a number of years. The indicative timetable for the main applications is included in the Gaelic Language Plan.

PÀRLAMAID NA H-ALBA A’ TOIRT SUAICHEANTAS DÀ-CHÀNANACH GÀIDHLIG – BEURLA A-STEACH

25 Giblean 2008

Chaidh ainmeachadh an-diugh gum biodh na briathran ‘Pàrlamaid na h-Alba’ air an toirt a-steach do shuaicheantas oifigeil Pàrlamaid na h-Alba.

Bidh 'Pàrlamaid na h-Alba' a’ nochdadh bhon latha an diugh air foillseachaidhean pàrlamaideach ùra, a’ cruth-atharrachadh uidheam a’ Chrùin ‘s a’ Chrann gu bhith na shuaicheantas dà-chànanach Beurla – Gàidhlig.

Tha an gluasad seo a’ tighinn mar phàirt de Phlana Gàidhlig na Pàrlamaid, a tha na riatanas fo Achd na Gàidhlig (Alba) 2005 , agus a tha ag amas air a’ phrionnsabal co-ionnanachd spèis a thoirt don Gàidhlig is don Bheurla, a chur an gnìomh.

Thuirt an t-Oifigear-riaghlaidh Ailig MacFhearghais:

“Is e fear de na geallaidhean bunaiteach a tha sa Phlana Gàidhlig againn, a’ Ghàidhlig a thoirt a-steach don dearbh-aithne chorporra againn. Le bhith a’ toirt a-steach na briathran “Pàrlamaid na h-Alba” do shuaicheantas gnàthaichte a’ Chrùin ‘s a’ Chrann tha seo a’ dearbhadh na taic leantainnich a tha sinn a’ toirt don Ghàidhlig agus do spiorad Achd na Gàidhlig.”

Tòisichidh foillseachaidhean ùra agus aithisgean na pàrlamaid a’ sealltainn an uidheam dà-chànanach mar a bheirear a-steach an dreach ùr oifigeil den t-suaicheantas pàrlamaideach.

Gus nach bi caitheamh agus cus cosgais ann, cumaidh a’ Phàrlamaid oirre a’ cleachdadh seann ghoireasan leithid pàipear-litreach le ainm na buidhne agus stoc bùtha gus am feumar tuilleadh òrdachadh.

Bidh cosgais mu £3,500 ann airson suaicheantas ùr a chruthachadh agus a thoirt a-steach. Fhuaras ionmhas bho Bhòrd na Gàidhlig fa chomhair nan cosgaisean sin.

Chaidh an obair dealbhaidh a chur an gnìomh le cùmhnantaiche foillseachaidh gnàthaichte na Pàrlamaid.

Cùl-fhiosrachadh

Fo Achd na Gàidhlig (Alba) 2005, faodaidh Bòrd na Gàidhlig, a’ bhuidheann air a bheil an dleastanas an Achd a chur an gnìomh, fios a chur gu buidhnean poblach a’ cur mar riatanas orra plana Gàidhlig a dheasachadh, gus an tèid am prionnsabal gum bu chòir co-ionannachd spèis a thoirt don Ghàidhlig is don Bheurla a chur an gnìomh.

Bu chòir gun suidhicheadh am plana na ceumannan a ghabhadh a’ bhuidheann a thaobh cleachdaidh na Gàidhlig nan cuid obrach agus gun stèidhichear ceann-latha airson na ceumannan sin a chur an gnìomh.

Is e amas na Pàrlamaid gun rachadh an dreach ùr den t-suaicheantas a thoirt a-steach beag air bheag thairis air grunn bhliadhnaichean.
