Committee makes fact-finding visit to Fort William

The Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee is visiting Fort William on 16 and 17 November as part of its scrutiny of the Aquaculture and Fisheries (Scotland) Bill.

The focus for the fact-finding visits is on farmed fisheries.

While in Fort William, the Committee will meet with staff from seafood company Marine Harvest and visit its operations in the area.

This will include attending a new smolt unit which the company has built and visits to their freshwater and seawater sites.

The Committee visited Aberdeenshire and Montrose on 9 and 10 November to look at how the River Dee was managed and to find out more information about a project to tackle climate change.

In Montrose, the Committee visited Usan Salmon Fisheries to see a traditional family-owned wild-salmon fishery in action.

Both these visits help the Committee to get a first-hand view of the potential impact of the legislation on wild and farmed fisheries, which will inform the MSPs' scrutiny of the bill.
