Views sought on the shape of further education in Scotland

06.12.2012

Proposals to reshape further education in Scotland are to be examined by the Scottish Parliament’s Education and Culture Committee as part of its consideration of the Post-16 Education (Scotland) Bill.

The Bill aims to change the way in which post-16 education is governed and structured and the Committee has today (Thursday 6 December) asked for comments on provisions contained within the bill. These include measures to take forward the regionalisation of Scotland’s colleges as well as proposals to widen access to higher education to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Committee Convener Stewart Maxwell MSP said:

“Scotland’s further and higher education system is crucial to the future success of our young people and indeed Scotland as a whole.

“The Bill sets out a number of measures fundamental to the future of further and higher education and our committee will examine what these mean in practice for Scotland’s colleges and universities and the impact they will have on those who attend to study and learn.

“As we begin our consideration of the bill, we want to hear from all of those affected by the measures it contains.”

The Committee is seeking views on the general principles of the bill and specifically on the six key areas the bill will cover. These are:

  • University governance
  • Widening access
  • Tuition fees cap
  • College regionalisation
  • Review of fundable further and higher education
  • Data sharing
