08.11.2013

Members of the public from across Scotland have submitted their most pressing health policy questions for MSPs on the Health and Sport Committee to ‘Ask the Health Secretary’.

Questions have been submitted on a range of important issues, including:
• The use of homeopathy in the NHS;
• The provision of mental health services;
• Complications arising from mesh surgery;
• Sport and wellbeing;
• Rehabilitation services;
• Pharmacies.

Questions will be put to Alex Neil MSP, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing by Committee members during a one hour session on 12 November at 09:30am. Members of the public can get a ticket to attend the session in person or watch it live online.

Convener of the Health and Sport Committee, Duncan McNeil MSP said:

“Our Committee is delighted that so many people have engaged in this session as it is a unique opportunity for members of the public to get their issues in front of the Cabinet Secretary.”

Deputy Convener Bob Doris MSP said:

“As a Committee we are always looking for new ways to engage members of the public in our work. Whilst our Committee regularly questions the Health Secretary, this session will be focussed on the issues that matter most to people from across Scotland”.

Background

The Committee received over 120 questions, via the web and social media. Due to the timescale, 18 questions have been selected for members of the Committee to ask the Cabinet Secretary.

The Health and Sport Committee examines the Scottish Government’s health policy, the NHS in Scotland, sport and other matters within its remit.
The Committee determines its own subjects for inquiry and also deals with any proposals for legislation, statutory instruments or petitions referred to it. Further details of the Committee’s work programme can be found on the Current Business section of the webpage.

Members of the public can book a ticket by calling our Visitor Services Team on 0131 348 5200 or watch it live on Scottish Parliament TV. An Official Report of the meeting will also be made available within a few days of the meeting.
