As a consultant paediatric nephrologist I set up the renal failure service for children in Scotland in 1972,working in the field for over 30 years.During that time, the most distressing thing for me was being faced with children severely ill from haemolytic uraemic syndrome. This illness can be caused by bacteria in contaminated water.I believe it is imperative that maximum effort is taken to ensure that children in Scotland are not exposed to contaminated water.

In 1972 I set up the renal failure service for children in Scotland and developed it until my retirement in 2006.I have no hesitation in saying that by far the most distressing times for me was when I was faced with treating children with haemolytic uraemic syndrome. Many of these children were seriously ill with life threatening disease. The very sad fact was that this illness can be caused by bacteria present in contaminated water.I believe that it is imperative that the children of Scotland are not exposed to contaminated water.
