A Day in the Life

Cara Slater

I’m the Outreach Education Manager here in Holyrood. Once upon a time, I was a teacher, but I’ve been with the Scottish Parliament for 14 years now!

I’m part of the Outreach Services team. Part of our job is to educate and engage pupils in the work of the parliament and democracy, through our school programmes –– and the variety of resources we produce.

My Outreach Education team run sessions for classes from P5 to S6 in schools of all types and levels, anywhere in the country. Along with our colleagues who support schools when they come to us here in Edinburgh, we are also increasingly working with the Scottish Parliament’s committees to involve young people directly in live consultations and business.

It was great to hear young people’s views on the Seatbelts on School Buses and Wild Animals in Travelling Circuses bills, and help them have their voices heard in Parliament: it was also great to see the MSPs use that evidence to help shape their thoughts on the issues.

My team and I get to see so many different parts of Scotland that most people probably never will – the Small Isles, Unst and Barra being some of my personal highlights - whilst the team based at within the Parliament get to work with pupils coming to visit us from far and wide.
